The big news at Buick in 1922 was the new four-cylinder engine. Since the end of World War I, in 1919, Buick was exclusively offering inline six-cylinder engines. With the reintroduction of the more affordable four-cylinder, Buick was able to offer cars at a slightly lower price point, more appropriate for the middle class customers in that post recession period.
The styling of the 1922 cars was essentially a hold over from 1921. The Four cylinder cars came standard with wood spoke wheels and only black paint with no other optional equipment.
The more affordable cars resulted in a notable jump in production and sales. Buick production rose significantly from 55,337 in 1921 to 106,788, a nearly doubling of output. Despite the improvement in sales, Buick actually dropped one notch in the production race to fourth place in the industry behind Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge in that order. Still, Buick continued its streak of placing in the top five American automobile manufacturers measured by volume. -
